Safety Check di Facebook: un social sempre più sociale

Quello che è accaduto a Parigi venerdì 13 novembre è stato l’ennesimo atto di terrorismo a cui l’opinione pubblica si sta tristemente abituando. L’11 Settembre del 2001 ha aperto una nuova stagione che, con molta probabilità, verrà ricordata dai libri di storia dei nostri nipoti come il “secolo degli attentati” per il numero crescente di fenomeni di questo tipo che si sono verificati in ogni parte del mondo.

Che il 21esimo secolo sia stato segnato dal susseguirsi di attentati non dovevamo di certo mostrarvelo noi e magari vi starete anche chiedendo perché parlare di simili fatti in un blog in cui solitamente parliamo di argomenti diversi e molto meno pregni di significati socio-politici.

In realtà, per quanto siamo rimasti fortemente colpiti da quello che è accaduto, in questa sede il nostro intento è di soffermarci sulla “Safety Check”, una funzione attivata da Facebook negli attimi immediatamente successivi ai fatti di Parigi e che ha posto accento sul ruolo sempre più sociale dei social network.

In realtà il Safety Check era stato pensato a Menlo Park inizialmente come strumento attraverso cui assicurare il popolo di Facebook delle proprie condizioni in caso di catastrofi naturali in tutto il mondo. Il suo funzionamento è molto semplice: si attiva in una condizione di rischio e chiede agli utenti che sono stati geolocalizzati in quella sede di dare dei feedback sulla propria salute, informazione che poi arriva direttamente nelle notifiche di tutti i loro contatti.

L’avvento di Facebook ha trasformato il nostro modo di comunicare, di relazionarci, di auto presentarci e in definitiva di vivere. Chi sei, dove vai e cosa fai sono oramai dati facilmente consultabili da tutti e non perché viviamo nella realtà profilata da George Orwell in “1984”, ma semplicemente perché siamo noi ad inserire queste informazioni e porle così alla mercè del nostro pubblico (a volte anche semplicemente attivando il proprio GPS).

Dalla strage di Parigi del 13 Novembre 2015 Zuckerberg ha deciso di estendere la funzione Safety Check anche per eventi non connessi alle calamità naturali, ma che di fatto generano il medesimo stato di allerta perché portatori di morte e devastazione. Sabato mattina, quindi, sui nostri profili Facebook in molti hanno ricevuto una notifica sulla condizione di amici e contatti che si trovavano la sera prima a Parigi.

Nonostante le numerose critiche che si sono sollevate rispetto alla decisione di Facebook di offrire l’opportunità di utilizzare questo strumento per l’attentato di Parigi ma non per i precedenti e altrettanto devastanti attacchi terroristici verificatisi in altre parti del mondo, la nostra posizione è molto più moderata e pensiamo che se gran parte della nostra vita si svolge online, è giusto utilizzare i social network anche per le comunicazioni importanti, come rassicurare chi abbiamo a cuore di stare bene se ci si trova nel pieno di eventi drammatici… e se questo non è stato fatto finora, beh è un bene che si sia iniziato!
