Era nell’aria da mesi e finalmente la modifica è arrivata, Twitter ammorbidisce il proprio limite di 140 caratteri permettendo all’utente di inserire contenuti multimediali o tirare in ballo altri utenti senza “sprecare” preziosi caratteri.
Che la novità sia abbastanza forte da modificare l’usability degli utenti è sicuro, ma quali saranno gli effetti nel lungo periodo per il social network dell’uccellino?
140 CARATTERI E NON SOLO
La conferma è arrivata ufficialmente la scorsa settimana: Twitter interviene su uno dei dogmi che lo avevano caratterizzato fin dalla nascita e “allarga” il limite di 140 battute.
- Tra poco le mention, i file multimediali caricati (i quali generano degli URL testuali) ed i relativi link ipertestuali non saranno più conteggiati nella lunghezza dei tweet. I link inseriti manualmente, invece, verranno normalmente contati all’interno del tweet.
In questo modo, si darà più spazio ai pensieri degli utenti, scartando comunque, l’ipotesi avanzata da molti qualche mese fa, dell’estensione a 10.000 caratteri come limite per i propri tweet trasformando il sito di micro-blogging, in qualcosa di profondamente diverso da quanto immaginato dai creatori.
- Addio inoltre all’espediente del puntino prima del nome degli altri utenti.
A breve, si potrà, infatti, chiamare in causa un altro utente a inizio messaggio senza dover mettere il puntino davanti alla chiocciola: tutte le citazioni saranno (potenzialmente) visibili all’intera lista di follower. - Cambiano i limiti alle repliche: quando si risponderà a qualcuno, le citazioni @nomeutente non conteranno più nei 140 caratteri.
- Sarà possibile auto-retwittarsi o citarsi, dando agli utenti ulteriori possibilità di espressione.
Lo scopo di queste mosse è sicuramente quello di semplificare l’accesso al micro-blogging anche a chi non ha particolari doti di sintesi, agevolando la scrittura di brevi concetti limitando le rigidissime limitazioni presenti fino ad oggi, ristabilendo l’originario concetto dei 140 caratteri che nel corso degli anni, con l’introduzione di GIF, foto o sondaggi, era sempre più messo a rischio.
Afferma Jack Dorsey, CEO e fondatore di Twitter:
Una delle nostre più grandi priorità di quest’anno è affinare il nostro prodotto e renderlo più semplice. Stiamo lavorando per rendere Twitter molto più semplice e veloce. E questa è la nostra forza: ciò che succede nel momento in cui succede, le conversazioni in tempo reale e la semplicità che ha caratterizzato il servizio fin dal principio.

La mossa rientra nella strategia di Todd Sherman, Product Manager di Twitter, di ravvivare un social network che negli ultimi mesi ha visto un calo organico non indifferente che ha fatto malignare molti sull’imminente fine del social network.
Altro dato interessante è quello relativo al tempo speso sui due social media: mediamente a maggio gli utenti di internet hanno trascorso 54 minuti su Twitter, mentre su Instagram ben 2 ore e 22 minuti.
Con l’inserimento di GIF e dirette video tramite Periscope, si preannunciano altre caratteristiche e feature in grado di migliorare l’esperienza sul sito, ma che allo stesso tempo potrebbero alterare l’originaria idea di Twitter.
